Recognising the Early Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
Problem gambling can affect anyone, and it usually develops gradually — which makes it easy to miss in yourself, even when it's obvious to people around you.
Common Warning Signs
Spending more time or money than planned, chasing losses with bigger bets, hiding spending from family, borrowing money to keep playing, feeling anxious or irritable when not playing, and neglecting work, studies or relationships are all recognised warning signs.
Why Early Recognition Matters
Gambling-related harm tends to compound the longer it goes unaddressed — financially, emotionally, and in relationships. Recognising a pattern early makes it far easier to change course than waiting until a crisis point.
A Simple Honest Check
Ask yourself: have I needed to bet more to get the same excitement? Have I gone back to win back a previous loss? Have I borrowed money to gamble? Has anyone close to me raised concerns? Answering honestly is the hardest part — the rest is just taking the next small step.
If two or more of these sound familiar, our Responsible Gambling page has practical tools and where to find support.
