Some people turn to gambling during stressful periods, using it as a distraction or an emotional escape. In the short term this can feel like relief, but it doesn't address the underlying stress, and financial losses can add a new source of anxiety on top of it.
The Cycle That Can Follow
Losses can trigger feelings of guilt or shame, which some people try to resolve by gambling again in hopes of winning back what was lost. This cycle can deepen financial and emotional strain rather than relieving it.
What Can Help
Recognising the connection is the first step. If you notice you're gambling specifically to manage stress, sadness, or anxiety rather than for entertainment, that's worth taking seriously. Speaking with a licensed counsellor, and using deposit or time limits in the meantime, are both practical starting points.
